International Lawyers, and Legal and Civil Society Organizations, Join Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor’s Request for Dismissal, or Alternatively, the Establishment of a Rigorous Oversight and Accountability Process of UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards.

On 28 August 2024, an official letter was submitted to the President of the UN Human Rights Council, H.E. Amb. Omar Zniber (Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN in Geneva), by the PAL Law Commission, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Worldwide Lawyers Association (WOLAS), along with other international organizations, civil society groups, and lawyers, requesting the dismissal of UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Edwards. The letter alleges that throughout her tenure, Edwards ignored the systematic torture practices and human rights violations against Palestinians, violated international law, and displayed a clear anti-Palestinian bias. It specifically highlights that she downplayed and legitimized Israeli torture against Palestinians, enabling Israel’s impunity. As an alternative to her dismissal, the establishment of a strict oversight and accountability mechanism to monitor her duties was requested.
